Ingredients
Scale
1 lb ground beef
1/2 lb ground pork
1/2 cup breadcrumbs, soaked in 1/4 cup milk
1/4 cup finely chopped onion
1 large egg, lightly beaten
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
2 tablespoons butter or oil for frying
12 oz wide egg noodles
For the Gravy:
2 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cups beef broth
1/2 cup heavy cream
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon Dijon mustard
Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
Combine the ground beef, ground pork, soaked breadcrumbs, chopped onion, egg, salt, allspice, nutmeg, and pepper in a bowl. Mix gently until just combined; do not overmix.
Roll the mixture into small, uniform balls, about 1 inch in diameter. You should have about 30 meatballs.
Melt the butter or oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Brown the meatballs in batches, turning to cook evenly on all sides. Remove the browned meatballs and set them aside.
Cook the egg noodles according to package directions until tender. Drain the noodles and keep them warm.
To make the gravy, melt 2 tablespoons of butter in the same skillet over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly to create a roux.
Gradually whisk in the beef broth until smooth. Bring the mixture to a simmer, stirring until the gravy thickens slightly.
Stir in the heavy cream, Worcestershire sauce, and Dijon mustard. Season with salt and pepper.
Return the browned meatballs to the gravy. Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 10 to 15 minutes, allowing the meatballs to cook through and absorb the sauce flavor.
Divide the cooked egg noodles among serving plates. Spoon the Swedish meatballs and generous amounts of gravy over the noodles.
Notes
For extra flavor in the meatballs, soak the breadcrumbs in milk for 5 minutes before mixing them in.
If you prefer a thicker gravy, let it simmer uncovered for a few extra minutes after adding the cream.
Serve with a side of lingonberry jam or cranberry sauce for a traditional accompaniment.
