A large, sturdy sugar cookie base decorated like a football field, perfect for slicing and serving at game day parties.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1/2 cup confectioners’ sugar (for icing)
  • 2 tablespoons milk (for icing)
  • Green food coloring gel
  • White food coloring gel
  • Yellow food coloring gel
  • Pretzel sticks (for goalposts)

Instructions

  1. Whisk together flour, baking soda, and baking powder in a bowl. Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract until combined.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing on low speed until just combined. Do not overmix.
  5. Divide the dough in half. Shape each half into a thick disc, wrap in plastic, and chill for at least 1 hour.
  6. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Line a large rectangular baking sheet (approx. 12×18 inches) with parchment paper.
  7. On a lightly floured surface, roll out one disc of dough to fit the baking sheet, aiming for about 1/4 inch thickness. This will be your field base.
  8. Carefully transfer the dough to the prepared baking sheet. Prick the dough all over with a fork to prevent large bubbles.
  9. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden. Let cool completely on the pan.
  10. While the cookie cools, prepare the icing. Mix confectioners’ sugar and milk until smooth. Divide the icing into three bowls.
  11. Color one large portion green for the field, one small portion white for yard lines, and one small portion yellow for end zones.
  12. Once the cookie is completely cool, spread the green icing evenly over the entire surface to create the ‘grass.’
  13. Use the white icing in a piping bag with a fine tip to pipe the yard lines and hash marks onto the green field.
  14. Use the yellow icing to pipe the end zones at each end of the cookie.
  15. Insert pretzel sticks into the center of each end zone to represent goalposts.
  16. Allow the icing to set before slicing and serving like a pizza.

Notes

  • For a sturdier base, chill the rolled-out dough on the baking sheet for 15 minutes before baking.
  • You can use store-bought vanilla frosting if you prefer not to make royal icing, but it will take longer to set.
  • Use small candies or fondant cutouts to represent players or team logos on the field.
