A recipe for making flaky, buttery Danish pastries filled with a sweet and tangy strawberry cream cheese mixture.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 package (14.1 ounces) refrigerated puff pastry sheets, thawed
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup fresh strawberries, sliced
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 2 tablespoons powdered sugar (for glaze)
  • 1 teaspoon milk (for glaze)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit (200 degrees Celsius). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Unfold the thawed puff pastry sheets onto a lightly floured surface. Cut each sheet into four equal squares.
  3. In a medium bowl, beat the softened cream cheese, granulated sugar, egg yolk, vanilla extract, and salt until smooth. This is your cream cheese filling.
  4. In a separate small bowl, mix the sliced strawberries, cornstarch, and water until the strawberries are coated.
  5. Place about 1 tablespoon of the cream cheese filling in the center of each pastry square.
  6. Top the cream cheese with a spoonful of the strawberry mixture.
  7. Score a border about 1/2 inch from the edge of each square using a sharp knife, being careful not to cut all the way through the dough. This helps create the raised edge.
  8. Gently fold the corners of the pastry toward the center, overlapping them slightly over the filling to form a square or diamond shape. Press the seams gently to seal.
  9. Brush the exposed pastry edges with the beaten egg wash.
  10. Bake for 18 to 20 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and puffed.
  11. While the danishes cool slightly, whisk together the powdered sugar and milk to create a thin glaze.
  12. Drizzle the glaze over the warm danishes before serving.

Notes

  • If you prefer a thicker strawberry topping, use less water when mixing with cornstarch.
  • For extra flakiness, chill the assembled danishes for 10 minutes before applying the egg wash and baking.
  • You can use frozen, thawed strawberries if fresh are unavailable, but drain them well before mixing.
