Make tender, flavorful pulled pork using your slow cooker with this simple honey garlic recipe.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 lb pork shoulder (Boston butt), trimmed
  • 1 cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 10 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon ginger powder

Instructions

  1. Place the pork shoulder in the bottom of your slow cooker.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, honey, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, smoked paprika, black pepper, salt, minced garlic, and ginger powder until combined.
  3. Pour the sauce mixture evenly over the pork shoulder in the slow cooker.
  4. Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for 8 to 10 hours, or on high for 4 to 5 hours, until the pork is easily shredded with a fork.
  5. Remove the pork from the slow cooker and place it on a cutting board or large plate. Shred the meat using two forks.
  6. Skim any excess fat from the liquid remaining in the slow cooker.
  7. If you prefer a thicker sauce, pour the remaining liquid into a saucepan and simmer over medium heat until reduced and slightly thickened, about 5 to 10 minutes.
  8. Return the shredded pork to the slow cooker and toss it well with the thickened honey garlic sauce.
  9. Serve immediately on buns or over your preferred side dish.

Notes

  • For an extra thick sauce, remove about 1 cup of the cooking liquid before shredding the pork. Mix 2 tablespoons of cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of cold water to create a slurry. Whisk the slurry into the hot liquid in a saucepan and cook until thickened. Pour this over the shredded pork.
  • Pork shoulder is the best cut for this recipe because its fat content keeps the meat moist during the long cooking time.
  • You can prepare this recipe ahead of time; it stores well in the refrigerator for up to 4 days or can be frozen for up to 3 months.
