Make a homemade barbecue sauce balancing sweet pineapple, spicy jalapeno, and rich bourbon flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup crushed pineapple, undrained
  • 1/2 cup bourbon
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 large jalapeno, seeded and minced

Instructions

  1. Combine the crushed pineapple, bourbon, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper in a medium saucepan.
  2. Add the minced jalapeno to the mixture.
  3. Bring the sauce to a simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally.
  4. Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer uncovered for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened slightly. Stir often to prevent sticking.
  5. Remove the saucepan from the heat.
  6. Carefully transfer the sauce to a blender or use an immersion blender. Blend until completely smooth.
  7. Pour the sauce back into the saucepan if necessary and heat through for 2 minutes before serving or storing.

Notes

  • For a thicker sauce, simmer for an additional 5 to 10 minutes.
  • If you prefer less heat, use only half of the jalapeno or remove all seeds and white pith.
  • Store the finished sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.
