- 1 cup dried hibiscus flowers (roselle)
- 8 cups water, divided
- 1/2 cup honey (adjust to taste)
- 1 orange, sliced (optional)
- 1 lime, juiced (optional)
- Fresh mint sprigs (optional)
- Combine the dried hibiscus flowers and 4 cups of water in a saucepan.
- Bring the mixture to a boil over medium-high heat.
- Once boiling, reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 10 minutes. This extracts the deep color and flavor.
- Remove the saucepan from the heat. Stir in the honey until it completely dissolves in the hot liquid.
- Strain the tea concentrate through a fine-mesh sieve into a heat-safe pitcher, discarding the flowers.
- Add the remaining 4 cups of cold water to the pitcher to dilute the concentrate.
- If using, add the orange slices and mint sprigs to the pitcher.
- Chill the tea in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours, or until completely cold.
- Before serving, stir in the fresh lime juice if desired. Serve over ice.
Notes
- For a stronger color, steep the flowers for an extra 5 minutes during simmering.
- If you prefer a cold brew method, steep the flowers in 8 cups of cold water in the refrigerator for 12 to 24 hours, then strain and sweeten.
- Dissolve the honey in a small amount of hot tea before adding it to the full batch for easier mixing.
- Add ginger slices during the simmer for a spicy note.
