A simple, quick recipe for traditional Irish soda bread featuring buttermilk and raisins. This bread requires no yeast and is ready fast.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 3/4 cups buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit (200 degrees Celsius). Lightly flour a baking sheet.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar.
  3. Stir in the raisins until they are evenly distributed throughout the dry mixture.
  4. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the buttermilk.
  5. Mix the ingredients quickly with a wooden spoon or your hands until just combined into a soft, slightly sticky dough. Do not overmix.
  6. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Gently knead it 3 or 4 times to bring it together into a round shape.
  7. Place the dough round onto the prepared baking sheet. Cut a deep cross into the top of the loaf, about half an inch deep.
  8. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the loaf sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  9. Remove the bread from the oven and cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Notes

  • For a traditional crust, brush the top of the loaf lightly with a little extra buttermilk just before baking.
  • If you do not have raisins, you can omit them or substitute them with dried currants.
  • You can substitute whole milk mixed with 1 tablespoon of lemon juice or white vinegar for buttermilk if needed; let it sit for 5 minutes before using.
