Whip up this easy, no-cook recipe for rich and creamy homemade hot cocoa mix. This big batch recipe uses simple pantry staples, tastes better than store-bought, and is perfect for cozy winter drinks or gifting.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups powdered milk (optional, see notes)
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (natural or Dutch-process)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional, for flavor depth)
  • 1/2 teaspoon instant espresso powder (optional, deepens chocolate flavor)

Instructions

  1. Gather all your dry ingredients: powdered milk (if using), sugar, cocoa powder, salt, cinnamon, and espresso powder.
  2. If you are making a large batch, use a very large bowl. If you are making a smaller batch, use a medium bowl.
  3. Add the granulated sugar, cocoa powder, salt, cinnamon, and espresso powder to the bowl. Whisk these ingredients together thoroughly until the mixture is uniform in color and there are no lumps of cocoa powder remaining.
  4. If you are including powdered milk for extra creaminess, add it now. Whisk again until everything is completely combined. This step is important for a smooth mix.
  5. Transfer the finished hot cocoa mix to clean, airtight containers. This mix stores well in the pantry for several months.
  6. To prepare one serving, combine 1/4 cup of the dry mix with 1 cup of hot milk or hot water. Whisk well until smooth and enjoy your rich, velvety hot chocolate.

Notes

  • For a richer, creamier result, use powdered milk. If you prefer a mix without powdered milk, simply omit it and increase the sugar and cocoa powder slightly to maintain volume, or use a higher ratio of milk when preparing the drink.
  • This recipe is excellent for gifting. Package the dry mix in decorative jars and top with mini marshmallows or chocolate chips for a thoughtful homemade gift.
  • Adjust the sugar to your preference. You can reduce it slightly if you prefer less sweetness in your final cup.
  • To make a single serving, use about 3 to 4 tablespoons of the mix per 8 ounces of hot liquid.
