Make the famous New Orleans dessert, Bananas Foster, right in your kitchen. You will caramelize ripe bananas in a rich, buttery rum sauce and serve it warm over vanilla ice cream for an indulgent, quick treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 firm, ripe bananas, peeled and sliced lengthwise
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup dark rum (for flambé)
  • 1/4 cup banana liqueur (optional, for deeper flavor)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt
  • Vanilla ice cream, for serving

Instructions

  1. Place a large, heavy-bottomed skillet over medium heat. Add the butter and allow it to melt completely.
  2. Add the brown sugar and cinnamon to the melted butter. Stir constantly until the sugar dissolves and the mixture becomes a smooth, bubbling caramel sauce. This takes about 2 minutes.
  3. Gently add the sliced bananas to the skillet in a single layer. Cook for about 1 to 2 minutes per side until the bananas are softened and coated in the sauce. Do not overcook them.
  4. Remove the skillet from the heat source temporarily. Pour the dark rum (and banana liqueur, if using) over the bananas.
  5. Return the skillet to the heat. Carefully ignite the rum using a long match or lighter. Stand back while the alcohol burns off (the flambé). Let the flames subside naturally.
  6. Once the flames die down, stir in the vanilla extract and salt. Swirl the sauce around the bananas.
  7. Serve the warm Bananas Foster immediately over scoops of cold vanilla ice cream. Enjoy this quick dessert recipe right away!

Notes

  • For a non-alcoholic version, substitute the rum with 1/4 cup of strong brewed coffee or extra banana juice, and skip the flambé step.
  • Use firm, slightly under-ripe bananas; overly soft bananas will break apart during cooking.
  • If you skip the flambé, you still create a wonderful buttery rum sauce; just simmer for one minute after adding the rum until the alcohol smell cooks off.
