Learn the simple, no-fuss method for baking sweet potatoes in the oven until they have a caramelized skin and a creamy, fluffy interior. This is the ultimate healthy side dish for any meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 medium sweet potatoes
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or melted butter
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Wash the sweet potatoes thoroughly under running water. Scrub the skin well to remove any dirt. Pat them completely dry with a paper towel.
  3. Prick each sweet potato several times all over with a fork. This allows steam to escape and prevents them from bursting.
  4. Rub the outside of each potato lightly with olive oil or melted butter.
  5. Sprinkle generously with salt and pepper.
  6. Place the seasoned sweet potatoes directly onto the oven rack. Do not use foil if you want crispy skin.
  7. Bake for 45 to 60 minutes, depending on the size of your potatoes. They are done when the skin is slightly wrinkled and caramelized, and you can easily pierce the center with a fork.
  8. Remove from the oven. Let them cool for a few minutes until you can handle them.
  9. Slice open lengthwise and fluff the inside with a fork before serving with your favorite toppings.

Notes

  • For extra fluffy results, you can bake them for the last 10 minutes directly on the oven rack after piercing them, skipping the oil and seasoning until after baking if you prefer a plain interior.
  • If you prefer a softer skin, wrap each potato loosely in aluminum foil before baking.
  • These baked sweet potatoes are perfect for meal prep; reheat them easily in the microwave or oven.
