Learn how to make perfect air fryer baked potatoes with crispy skin and a fluffy center quickly. This hands-off method is ideal for busy weeknights or as a fast holiday side dish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 medium Russet potatoes
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon coarse salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)

Instructions

  1. Scrub the Russet potatoes well under cool water. Dry them completely with a paper towel; moisture prevents crispy skin.
  2. Use a fork to poke holes all over each potato, about 6 to 8 times per potato. This lets steam escape.
  3. In a small bowl, mix the olive oil, coarse salt, pepper, and garlic powder (if using).
  4. Rub the oil mixture evenly over the entire surface of each potato. Make sure the skin is well coated.
  5. Preheat your air fryer to 400°F (200°C).
  6. Place the seasoned potatoes in the air fryer basket in a single layer. Do not overcrowd the basket; work in batches if necessary.
  7. Air fry for 30 to 35 minutes. At the halfway point (around 15 minutes), carefully flip the potatoes over using tongs.
  8. Check for doneness by piercing a potato with a fork or knife; it should slide in easily. If not, continue cooking in 3-5 minute increments.
  9. Remove the potatoes from the air fryer. Immediately slice them open lengthwise down the center. Gently squeeze the sides to fluff up the inside.
  10. Add your favorite toppings and serve immediately.

Notes

  • For extra fluffy centers, you can microwave the potatoes for 3 minutes before oiling and air frying. This speeds up the internal cooking process.
  • Russet potatoes are the best choice for achieving that classic fluffy interior texture.
  • If you are making a large batch, consider using the oven for the rest while using the air fryer for the first few to save time.
  • Toppings ideas include: sharp cheddar cheese, crumbled bacon, sour cream, chives, butter, or chili.
